Global Used Excavator Market Enters a New Era of Value Upgrade

Release time: 2026-04-09

Currently, the global used excavator market is in a critical stage of supply-demand restructuring and value upgrading. Driven by three core drivers—policy support, overseas market expansion, and accelerated digital transformation—the industry has bid farewell to the extensive development model and entered a refined development phase centered on quality, service, and compliance. The logic of market competition has shifted from simple price competition to comprehensive value competition.

In the domestic market, equipment replacement has become the core engine of industry growth. A batch of mainstream excavators sold many years ago has entered the declining stage of their service life, and a large number of equipment have reached the natural renewal node. At the same time, national environmental protection standards are constantly tightening, and old and high-emission equipment are gradually withdrawing from the market. Models meeting National III and above emission standards have become the mainstream choice in market transactions due to their environmental advantages. Currently, the transaction volume of compliant used excavators in the country has increased significantly, and the market has higher and higher requirements for the condition, performance, and compliance of equipment.

Against this background, manufacturers and trading platforms have launched comprehensive “trade-in + intelligent upgrading” service packages, effectively improving the circulation efficiency of high-quality used equipment. The regional market presents a gradient distribution characteristic of “upgrading in the east and digesting in the central and western regions”. Among small-tonnage models, classic models represented by the Komatsu PC56 series are highly favored by individual merchants and engineering contractors due to their stable performance and low maintenance costs. The transaction price of such models is significantly affected by the year of manufacture, actual operating hours, and maintenance status. Usually, equipment with low operating hours and proper maintenance has a much higher transaction value than the average level of the same series. For example, a Komatsu PC56-7 with less than 5,000 operating hours and regular maintenance can be sold at a price 15% higher than the average transaction price of the same model with more than 10,000 operating hours.

Overseas markets have become an important growth pole for China’s used excavator exports. With the continuous release of infrastructure construction demand in emerging markets such as Southeast Asia, Africa, and South Asia, China’s used excavators have occupied an important share in the international market due to their high cost performance, improved spare parts supply network, and adaptability to local working conditions. Compared with new equipment, used excavators have a 40%-60% price advantage, making them the preferred choice for small and medium-sized engineering enterprises to reduce initial investment costs. For instance, in Southeast Asian countries, many local small engineering companies prefer to purchase used excavators from China for road construction and farmland renovation projects, as they can save a lot of capital while meeting the construction needs.

However, used equipment exports have long faced compliance challenges, such as compliant export without input invoices, brand declaration risks, and cross-border trust building. In recent years, the introduction of a number of new foreign trade policies and digital service platforms has accurately addressed these pain points. Some trade models support tax-exempt export without input invoices, and supporting digital platforms provide full-process closed-loop services covering customs declaration, foreign exchange settlement, and taxation, making the compliant overseas expansion path smoother for small and medium-sized export enterprises. Many enterprises have achieved batch export of multiple high-quality used excavators through such platforms. For example, a construction machinery enterprise in Xuzhou exported 20 used excavators, including 8 Komatsu PC56-7 units, through a digital trade platform, realizing compliant customs declaration without invoices and saving nearly 40,000 yuan in service costs, while the customer repurchase rate reached more than 50%.

Digital transformation has also injected new vitality into the industry. The popularization of online auction platforms and O2O transaction models has greatly shortened the transaction cycle of used excavators. Compared with traditional offline channels, the transaction premium rate of online channels is higher. At the same time, the official certified used equipment business is developing rapidly. Through standardized evaluation, full-life cycle traceability, and exclusive after-sales guarantee, it has solved the trust pain point between transaction parties and promoted the industry towards standardization and normalization. For example, a well-known excavator manufacturer has launched a certified used equipment service, which conducts 120+ professional inspections on each used excavator, provides a 6-month quality guarantee, and its transaction volume has increased by 30% year-on-year.

From the perspective of market demand trends, small-tonnage excavators will continue to maintain growth momentum, adapting to scenarios such as the improvement of urban and rural infrastructure and the implementation of rural revitalization projects. In contrast, medium and large-tonnage excavators still face certain pressure due to factors such as the sluggish real estate market. For industry participants, focusing on compliant operations, building a digital trust system, and exploring potential overseas markets will be the core path to seize future development opportunities.

Industry analysts said that the used excavator industry has bid farewell to the era of barbaric growth relying on information gaps and entered a refined development stage centered on quality and service. With the continuous improvement of the policy system and the deepening of digital transformation, the standardization level of the industry will be further improved, and enterprises with core competitiveness and compliant operation capabilities will gain broader development space in the market. At the same time, the in-depth integration of the global supply chain and the differentiated needs of regional markets also provide diversified opportunities for Chinese used excavator enterprises to expand their international territory, and the industry is expected to achieve higher-quality sustainable development.
