A Guide to Avoiding Pitfalls When Buying a Used Excavator: Must-See for Beginners to Get More for Less

Release time: 2026-03-20

After working in the construction industry for many years, I have seen too many beginners fall into the “low-price trap” due to blind purchase of used excavators, ending up with more losses than gains. The used excavator market has undergone a restructuring of supply and demand, where value competition has replaced price competition. Choosing the right equipment can not only save costs but also make projects more efficient. Today, I will share a practical purchasing guide that even beginners can easily avoid pitfalls.

The primary principle for buying a used excavator is “match the working conditions and don’t be greedy for low prices”. Many people are tempted by the “near-new machines” priced at 70,000 to 80,000 yuan in Kunshan, Shanghai, Hefei, Anhui and other places, but in fact, most of them are old machines renovated, which are likely to have the risk of deposit fraud. It is recommended to first clarify the operation scenario: for municipal and garden projects, choose models with gentle use; for mining and demolition machines, due to high fatigue of structural parts, beginners should be cautious. In terms of tonnage, small machines of 15-20 tons are flexible and efficient, and medium-sized machines of 20-30 tons have strong versatility. Choosing on demand is the key.

Inspecting the machine is the core, and you can see the true condition of the machine in three steps. First, check the appearance: focus on whether there is welding repair at the root of the boom, whether the paint surface is uniform, use simple methods to check for cracks, and be alert to paint covering damage. The thickness of the track bottom plate and the wear degree of the bucket should match the hour meter to avoid buying a machine with adjusted hours. Second, test the core components: start the engine to listen for abnormal noises, and the exhaust should be free of black smoke and blue smoke to be qualified. When testing the hydraulic system, the movements should be smooth without leakage or jamming. Finally, verify the history: ask the seller to provide the original maintenance records, verify the working hours by scanning the code through the brand APP, and directly avoid sellers who refuse to answer key questions.

Channels and transactions should not be ignored. Prioritize contacting individual owners or regular dealers, avoid intermediaries’ multiple transfers, and refuse remote transactions where you only look at pictures but not the actual machine. When trading, refuse to pay the full amount at one time, agree on a trial period, sign a formal contract, and clarify the fault liability clauses. If you don’t know how to inspect the machine, you can find a third-party organization. A testing fee of several hundred to several thousand yuan can avoid the risk of large-scale maintenance.

The used excavator market is becoming more and more standardized. As long as you remember “don’t be greedy for low prices, inspect the machine carefully, and trade standardizedly”, you can choose cost-effective equipment. A used excavator is not a “second-hand product”, but a cost-effective choice for construction workers. If you choose the right one, it will be a good helper to help you make profits.
